swimmers who had come
before him; first he wanted to
emulate Webb, then he was
inspired by Burgess, and so,
unlike many women Thames
swimmers, he saw himself as
part of a glorious tradition.
He knew what other men had
done and he wanted to beat
them; his motivation was to
set a new record, to achieve
