Lewis Carroll set out for
Godstow (a hamlet on the
Thames) with Alice Liddell
and her sisters and, while
journeying upriver, first came
up with the story that would
become Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland. His 1865 book
includes Alice’s swim with
Mouse in the Pool of Tears,
and illustrations variously
