An iron fence was erected
around the bath, high enough
at the south end to ‘prevent
the interior from being seen
from the Railway’,
presumably to shield train
passengers from the sight of
naked bathers.
It may seem amazing now
that a riverside town was
actively encouraging its
inhabitants to swim in the
River Thames, providing not
only a pool but a springboard,
