1890s this was seen as a civic
responsibility, to meet the
needs of swimmers by
creating official bathing
spots, and the Thames was
the obvious place to do this.
Reading, boasted the local
press, ‘may now congratulate
itself on having one of the
finest open air swimming
baths in the country’.
