swimmers set off together
with the objective of being
the first to finish, within a
radius of three miles. There
were just four competitors,
the water was ‘very cold’ and
they were watched by 150
spectators. By spring 1894
the Reading Swimming Club
was said to be ‘flourishing’. It
now had a new clubhouse on
