At the club’s entertainment in
1897 swimming was ‘not so
popular as a spectacle it ought
to be, and there was no very
large crowd at the
Corporation Baths’, despite
an ‘excellent programme of
events, ranging from grave to
gay, and intermingling with
the serious sport such items
as greasy-pole climbing,
blindfold race, etc.’.
