Bombay and I swam
competitively from the age of
five. I was taught to swim at a
Europeans-only club. A
woman trained us up and told
me, “you’re good enough to
get to the Olympics one day”,
although I didn’t.’ In 1951 he
returned to the UK and took
part in public schools relays
in London run by Otter, who
