His first swim in the
Thames came the year he
joined, when he did the mile
at Windsor and the half-mile
at Henley. ‘I was worried
most about my eyes and
getting them infected. But the
biggest difference between a
river and a pool is that in a
pool you can see the bottom
and you can swim in a line. In
the Thames I always do ten
pairs of strokes, then I look
