he was a member of the
club’s 4×110 yards freestyle
relay team which won the
ASA title. The following year
he was the seventh fastest
Englishman over 110 yards at
the ASA championships,
while he won the annual mile
in 1967, 1968 and 1970.
In the mid-sixties the club
stopped swimming in the
Thames – ‘the water was said
to be a risk to health’ – but
returned to the river a few
