swimming for Eton pupils
became even more organised,
thanks to William Evans and
George Selwyn who
introduced classes under
Evans’ tuition. Evans was
drawing master, while
Selwyn was a private tutor
and a keen swimmer who
would become Bishop of
New Zealand. His feats
included diving 10 feet over a
thorn bush overhanging the
