Commons race’ because the
cup was subscribed for by
members of both Houses of
Parliament. The original
course was from Putney to
Westminster Bridge or vice
versa, then it was changed
from Putney to Charing
Cross. In 1879 the race was
handed over to the
Metropolitan Swimming
Association, and was later run
by its successor, the Amateur
Swimming Association
