people think: ‘at Chiswick
it’s 144 metres wide but when
we ask visiting school groups
how wide they think it is,
most guess 50 metres or less!
The current is much stronger
than people realise as well;
it’s not helped by the fact that
the Thames is much narrower
than it was originally,
because of artificially built
riverside embankments, so
the same amount of water
flows deeper and faster than it
