set sail for England to try and
‘swim back the family
fortune’, lost in the
Depression of the 1890s.
During the long voyage
from Australia she paced the
decks to keep fit, often
walking as much as ten miles.
But London, she later wrote,
was the ‘bitterest
disappointment’ of her life
and the streets ‘as still as the
