The career novelist

(Nancy Kaufman) #1
Self-promotion or self-delusion?

Even then you will probably have to do a certain amount of work
yourself; for instance, thank you notes and follow-up. You may, at
this stage, want to invest in coaching. For eight hundred to three
thousand dollars, TV pros will spend four hours or so preparing you
for TV exposure. It is expensive, but by now you should be reaping
the rewards of the step-by-step work you have done over the years.
Is all this sounding like a lot of work? Are the born-again self-
promoters beginning to seem like a bunch of amateurs in a sea of
publicity-sawy sharks? Well, it is and they are.
Do you want to join them? The rewards can be great, but the
truth is that few authors—and even fewer novelists—succeed at the
self-promotion game. Perhaps you are one of the few who have the
right combination of skills, savvy, and enthusiasm. Perhaps not.
Whatever your path, though, be sure that your first priority remains
writing irresistible stories.
Promotion is worthless if you have nothing to sell.
