Many of us enjoy a fat with our raw green leafy vegetable
salads. This is a perfect combination! If you feel the need for
concentrated fat, then as well as the hulled seeds, oil is an option.
Use the freshest, well stored oil then soak the greens to taste.
The
Shelf
life
of
Hemp
Store any product containing essential fats well – use dark
packaging (where light cannot penetrate) and store in cool, dry
place. Nature packages these essential fats in seeds such as
hemp. This protects the meaty constituent from light and oxygen.
When the seed is processed through hulling, pressing into oil or
crushing into flour there is an intermediate increase in the risk and
speed of rancidity. This is why there are different shelf lives for
different hemp products. As with any food, the less processing
involved, the better.
Approximate recommendations for shelf life of hemp seed
varies depending on the exact method of production, packaging
and storing used. Most products taste fine after the shelf life has
expired. However, the level of rancidity or level of multiplication of
free-radicals is deemed to be at the limit for a healthy balanced
diet after:
24 months from date of harvesting whole organic hemp seed (ripe,
kept in a cool, dark place, preferably packaged in foil lined
cardboard tubs or paper).
12 months from date of hulling organic hemp seed (if using fresh
seeds kept in a cool, dark place, packaged in a foil based
container). 12 months maximum for true cold pressed extra virgin
hemp seed oil (pressed and packaged in an oxygen free
environment, sealed and stored in a dark bottle in the fridge).
9 - 12 months for hemp ice cream (based on fresh hemp milk, kept
frozen).
