Warm-up:


  1. Thinkof a time a strong storm occurred. What can you remember about it? Write
    down key words.

  2. Now, pairwith another student and share your “storm memories.”

  3. Note similarities to sharewith the class.


Give students an overview of the task. Then:


  • Distribute blank U.S. maps

  • Tell students to find the temperature for each city listed on the activity sheet.
    Te m p e r a t u res can be found on the USA Today (or other newspaper) weather p a g e.

  • On your map, indicate the location of each city with its temperature. (Note: Be sure
    you have cities on each side of the front and that temperature differences are easily
    distinguished)

  • Circle the six coolest in blue, the 6 warmest in red.

  • Have the students work through the student activity sheet.


Note: The lesson warm-up for the following day could include a viewing of AM
Weather from public television or other weather forecast. Be sure to videotape it the
day of and after the storm.
