Noteson Egyptian Inscriptionsof the MiddleKingdom.—I.

I. Among the contracts which Hept'efaa, in the reign of
UsertesenI, made for the benefit of his ka, there is one —the third
of those recited in his tomb —in which the other partywas the
corporation of the temple of Apuat, consisting of ten members.
Fromthe schedule (SiutI, lines 266-288)we see at a glance that
the ^ fl 1 or ' director of the prophets ' received twiceas much as
each of the inferior members,who all share equally; and in the
recital,or perhaps we should rathersay in the body of the contract
as written, we find thattheircontributionsalsowerein the same
proportion.
Mostof the contracts weremadeeitherwithindividualssingly
or with classesof subordinate priests, suchas the H ^W I.

who appearto have beenall on an equal footing; but the ninth
affordsanotherinstanceof a distinction beingobserved. Theother
partyhere consistedof the " director of the necropolis-people"

calledsimply ® W>, "dwellerson the mountain," (not,of course,
" Bedawin" or foreigners). In the recital we find that the provisions
suppliedwereas follows :—
Fromthe director, 2 jars of beer, 100 scones or flat loaves, 10
whiteloaves.
Fromthe ranger, 1 jar of beer, 50 scones or flat loaves, 5 white
loaves.
Fromthe eight mountainpeople, 8 jars of beer,' 400 sconesor
flatloaves, 40 white loaves(thatis, from eachof the last, 1 jar of
beer, 50 scones or flat loaves, 5 white loaves).
Hereagainthe director wasto supply twiceas much as each of
the others.
Anotheritemof the contract wasthat Hept'efaa shouldgiveto
