the other party R £\ II|~|> the proportions beingrecorded
in a schedule of which onlythe first column, containingthe titles of
the recipients, is at all legible. However,on the analogy of the
formercases, the director wasprobablyto have twice as much as
eachof his subordinates : there werenine personsto receive equally
(therangerandeight mountain-people),and one otherto receive a
doubleportion. Theproblemwas thereforeto obtain elevenportions,

presumablynot fractional amounts,out of 9 v\ ' ] T | |. Now
i T naturally means 2000,and| | should mean 2. ., and as 2002..
gaveno satisfactory result,it was quite evidentthatthe T T and the
1 1 referred to different units. J", looked verylike the odd eleventh
portion,and in fact the only solutionwas to make T = 10 — ; then
eachportionwas ]"j , the «Sv <=>o ~L Mi receivedJ^J the ^ <k
receivedj"j, and the 8 *^ received 16 — or J ■ On comparing
thesefigureswiththe traces of the schedule on the wall, I found no
disagreement, and had thus fairlyobtained the little secret that

Whetheror no X \\ T actually means 1000 hat I cannot
decide, althoughit seems veryprobable. In this case — is 100 hat.
But it will be observed thatT is really an unit, otherwise the sum
SIkSllM wouldhavebeenwritten\\^™.
From the following passagewe obtain a connection between
\ and the \ §=s=f , \ j#s of later texts. I found the quotation in
Brugsch'sWtb.,Suppl.,p. 898, wherethe text is very correct,but
the provenance faulty. At the last moment I have tracedit to the
tombof Sebek nekht(earlyXlllthDynasty)at El Kab (cf. Champ.,
Not.Desc,I, p. 273, a bad copy).
