correctionsof the received textof the d'Orbiney Papyrus(March,1889,
continuedwith thesametitlein the June number),has in Notes on a
Tourin Upper Egypt(April,1889),commenceda series of communi
cationswhichwill be of great assistanceto students.
Thelast noteof the Egyptian sectionto be mentioned is that by the
Rev.HenryGeorgeTomkins,to whom we have oftenbeenindebtedfor
papersdealingwiththe interesting subjectof the identification of Towns
mentioned in the Egyptian lists of conquests : Note on the Name
Nepirfuriuin the Karnak Listsof Northern Syria(January,1889).
To turn to the Assyrian section. TheSocietyhasbeen fortunatein
beingableto publish a large numberof translations andtexts. Someof
the latter nowappearin print for the first time,andit is sincerely to be
hoped,for the benefit of students, thatduringthepresentsessionsome
competentscholarwill lay before theSocietytranslationsof those texts
whichstillremainunexplained.
In June, 1888,twopaperswereprinted,dealingwiththe important
discoveryat Tel-el-Amarnaof tabletswithcuneiformwriting. Thefirst,a
valuablecatalogue,by Mr. E. A. Wallis Budge,withselectedspecimensof
thoseobtainedby the British Museum. Thesecond,by Prof. Sayce,
describingand translating tablets preserved in other collections. A
fittingsupplementto the latteris found in Prof. Sayce'spaper,entitled,
TheCuneiformTabletsof Tel-el-Amarna nowpreservedin the Boulaq
Museum(June,1889).
Besidesthispaper,whichgivestranslationsof a large numberof texts,
the Societyhasbeen indebtedto the samewriterfor two othershort
letters(November,1888), Noteon the BabylonianWeight(see Vol. X,
p. 464),andGreekGraffitiat Abydos (June, 1889 ; see also Vol.X, p. 377).
Thevaluable seriesof papers by the Rev.C. J. Ball, commenced
in the last volumeof the Proceedings, hasbeencontinued,andI may
saynearlycompleted. It must be a subject of sincere congratulation
to the Societyto have now for the first timeso large a number of
texts and translations collected togetherrecording the actionsof a
kingwhoplayedso important a part in Bible history. Thefollowing
is a list of those in the present volume:—
