The signs of the Zodiac reached India throughthe Greeks,*
and duly appearin the Tamil Solar-lunarlist, but they are found in a
non-solarorder,and in one which, harmonizingwiththe Euphratean
Tablet,places Capricorn,styledMakaram, andby Hindu writers
elsewhere, "the Makara," last, and, consequently, the Urn of
Aquariusfirst. '
Elsewhere,twhentreatingof the ten Antediluvian Babylonian
Kingsin connexion withthe ecliptic, I have shownthat the legendary
lengths of their reigns correspond with the distances separating
certain ecliptical stars; and when allowance has beenmade for
variancein tradition and alteration in records, the agreement is very
remarkable. Thelist appears thus:—

in it, with Skat("theLeg,"= i Aquarii), alsostyledSakib ("the
Pourer") ; e Aquarii is especially calledSitula(" the Urn "), the con
stellation generally, the Burjad dalu {" The Constellationof the
Pitcher")of the Arabs, appearing in the Tamil List as Kumbha
(" the Watering-pot"). There are, therefore, strong reasons for
identifying the Kakkab Apin with Skat, or with Skat and the
adjoining stars, since kakkab also signifies ' constellation' ; and
the meaning of ' channel,' suggested by Mr. Pinches, would be
