(and may have marked at a remote period) the flowfrom the
Urn. The"Channel"star mayhavebecome the "Foundation"
star by a secondary meaning. " The channelsof waters " (ai ir,^al
my i&artuv) are connected by the Hebrew poetwith" the founda
tionsOf the world " * (to 0efie\ia T;y« olicov/ievns).\ In this partof
the heaven is situated the Great Deep,wherein swim Cetus("the
Sea-monster"),the three Fish,the Dolphin, andthe Sea-goat ; and
its position here in connexion withthe ' Foundation ' and ' Goat'
stars, alike at the beginning and end of things, is in perfect
accordance with Sumero-Akkadian beliefrespecting the Abzu or
"wateryabysswhichwasthe source of all things," J and whichin
one aspect is, and in another contains,the Tiamat or CV/«j-monster.§
The ruling divinityof the " Star of the Foundation " is appro
priatelythe god Sar,Ak. An-sar, the power of the upper expanse,
who is named in the Creation Legend,and whose name" is generally
read Assur as a deity in later times,beingan ordinary symbolfor
the supreme godof the Assyrians." || His position in the interesting
Euphratean Theogony preservedby Damaskios, is shown by the
