it was made to commence on the first newmoonafterthe summer
solstice. So Avienus writes:—
" Primaeua Metonexordiasumpsitab anno,
TorreretrutilocumPhoebussidereCancrum."*
I may addthat "theEnglishbegan theiryearon the 25th of
December until the time of William the Conqueror," when the
historicalyearwas made to commence on January 1, the date of his
coronation.
