tion of the Temple, 592 years mustbe reckoned for this period,
according to the repeated statement of Josephus, who doesnot
evenmentionthe 480 yearsof the Bible.* Thesuccessivechrono
logical dataheretransmittedfor the time fromthe division of the
land under Joshua until Samuel amount exactly to 450 years,
provided that either we allow no time for the indefinite period
withouta leader afterthe division of the land and beforeChusan-
Risathaim, transmitted in Judges ii, 6-8, or that the probable 32
yearsof Samuel's judgeshipare indefinitely shortened. In the latter
case there couldnot have beenany definite periodfromthe Exodus
to the foundation of the Temple, neither one of 480 yearsnor
one of 592 years. Paulrefersto the period of 450 years,f and it is
exactlyaccordingto the Scripture. If to 450 we add onlythe 40
yearsfromthe Exodus to the succession of Moses by Joshua, we
get already ten years morethanthe entire periodfromthe Exodus
to the foundation of the Temple is said to have lasted. We have
sufficientreasonfor assuming thatthisperiodhas indeed extended
over 592 years. For only on this, supposition, and by starting
from b.c. 2360 as the Biblical year for the Flood, we arrive at
the synchronisms whichcomparative chronology demands.^ We
accordingly get B.C. 971 for the foundation of the Temple, 934 for
Solomon'sdeath, and, aftera chaotic periodof two years, according
to the Septuagint, 932 for Rehoboam's accession to the throne,
therefore 928 for his fifth regnalyear, whichis also the twentieth
of Shishak.
Thethirty-fouryearswhich Manetho ascribesto this Pharaoh
can now be asserted to include the thirteen yearsduring which
Sheshenk wasonly co-regentwith his father-in-law Psusennes II
or Pisebkam. Forthe XXIst Dynasty of Royal High-priests, to
which Psusennesbelonged,Manethohas transmitted 130 years; for
the XXIInd Dynasty, that of Sheshenk, 135 ; for the XlXth Dynasty
162;for the XVIIIth Dynasty, 236 years. It being nowcertain
that Sheshenk's co-regencyof thirteen yearsbeganin 948, Ahmes
