The regent-divinity of the River is the Fire-god, oftenidentified
with the Sun-god, and the connexion between the latter and
Eridanus, I have fully illustrated elsewhere. The name of the
Akkadian Fire-god Kibir.the Sumerian Gibil,according to Lenor-
mant, reappearsin the name of the Emperor E\a.-ga6a/-us; and, as
has been remarkedby Prof. Lacouperie,is found in the Mongolian
ghtl, and otherTuranianwordsfor ' fire.' In an " Incantation to
Fire,"Gi-bilor Bil-gi is addressed as " The Fire-god,the prince who
(is) in the lofty country." 1
