thanat present. " The god Latarak" is named on a Planisphere,
and in W.A.I. IV, 21, No. 1, we read (ap.Sayce);—


"Againstall evil that cannotbe faced (set)the Honey-god and
Latarak[i.e.,theirimages]in the gate."

Andin W.A.I. IV, 58, 59, Latarak is called "thedivinekingof the
desert(Eden)."

TheLadyis Belat (Beltis),the wife of Bel ; Tintirki is a common
namefor Babylon, andthe Star in question is Spica (a Virginis),
whichformsthe 14th Arabianmoon-station.

Whatevermightbe the exact meaning of the Akkadian name
Entenamasluv,or Etttemasmur,^ it is explained by the Assyrian Sir
etsen-tsiri,\"the Tipof the Tail," a name suitableto various stars,
e.g., to Denebola.% Thestar Entenamasluv is equated withthe As
syrianKhabatsi-ranu,"a Lily," which,Prof.Sayceobserves,"grows
up like a tail." In a list of animal-names or of names moreor less
connectedwithanimals,|| we meet with the «-S^£^^>f- t^ti
Sa-^-masluv,explainedby the Assyrian Ct] f TTT eJU^iap-par-
ru-u,which,accordingto Delitzsch, is a variant of the Heb. opher,
"a gazelle." Be this as it may, we now come to a very curious
pieceof corroborative evidence. It will be obvious to anyone who
has read the foregoingremarks, that the Star(or Constellation)
Entenamasluvmustbe, or be in, or near the Constellation now^f
