THE NAMES OF ISIS AND OSIRIS.
By P. Le Page Renouf.
One of our respected colleagues* has recentlyquoteda state
mentwhichI made in these Proceedingsmorethansix years ago,
viz. : that " The real names of Isis and Osirisin the classic timesof
Egyptare as yet open questions."! Whateverdoubts I had at that
timewere,however, dispelledbefore manymonths wereover; as
maybe seen by a note in the May numberof the same yearof the
Proceedings. It may still be true that Egyptologistsare not unani
mouson the subject of these names; but that is because theyhave
not paid attentionto evidence which is palpable to all who will only
takethe trouble to look at it.
The evidenceto which I refer is found in the variants of the
divinenamesinvokedin the Litany of Ra.
Thesenamesoccurin a fixed orderin the different royaltombs
at Bab el Moluk, and also on a monument of the same periodas the
tombs,—the Temple of Ramese sat Abydos. J The orderof the
namesin the Temple onlydiffersfromthat in the Tombs by alter
nating from the north to the south side of the chamber. The
followingtable, consistingof the names from n to 22 inclusively,
will show whatI mean :—
