Thus far, I have purposelyconfined my comparisons to two
soundsonly. But a modification of the vowels, whichis so common
in Accadian thatit may be called normal(bar= bir, bur), woulden
able us to adduce many otherChinese parallels. Thus the last
instancesabovemaybe compared withpiao,old sound bio, i.e., bir,
Cantonesepiu, Shanghaipio, " the highest peakof a ridge," and
piao, "thetopmostbranchof a tree"; also, "to rise," and "best,"
"fine." TheChinesepao, "to sit on eggs," "to hatch," implying
a primitive ba-r,maybe at once connectedwithfu, old pu = pur,
bur, "to brood on eggs"; and both with the Accadian J|r;f|
kin-bur, andits Assyrian replica kinburru (fa issUrt), "a bird's
nest." (With kin, cp. Chinese kin, "a clay hut or cabin"; or
perhaps ratherkin,"birds,"the class Avts, in which casekinbur
wouldmeanthe brooding of birds. But as the character is also read
ab-lal,whichis explained to mean kinnuSa isstiri, "a bird's nest,"
it seems probablethatkin-buris synonymous.)
TheAccadianbar,in some of its senses, has duplicates in bad
