to descent fromthe royal race,an historical condition of which we
mayfindexamplesin Germanic history.
Themeaningof Demos or Timmi [Dem] is supported by a
Phrygianword, and by a common form of Dem in the African
languagesfor son, child.
ThatMr. Rylands has determined the emblem for king, timehas
the more convinced me. The character for land or country, a
doubleor treble dental,is a common paleographicfact.
Thereremain the first two characters, to which Tar-Konare
assigned by me, and as to which various ascriptions of animals
have been madeby others. On examining theseheads with the
ancientand later coinsof Sardis in the region of the inscriptions of
the Niobe and pseudo-Sesostris, theiridentityis not doubtful. On
the coins will be found the conventional headsas on the boss, and
laterthe distinct headsof the Bull and Lion, and furtheron the
Bulland Lion embodied.
Headsas the type of an animal are found still in MSS. of South
westernChina(CaptainGill'sMSS.),and in Indian recordsof North
America, thatis a part for the whole.
The three tuftson each sideof the head are a plural symbol
for hair, for the mane of the lion, of which thereare paleographic
examples. Theuse of three for a plural is widely distributed, as
threefingersfor the hand in North America,NewZealand,&c.
The Bulland Lion, the Bull taking precedence of the Lion,
andthe name of Tarkon andits equivalents, are found extensively
on the coins, monuments, and place namesof the region, though
more might havebeenwrittenon the subject, if men's mindshad
not been prepossessed by various theoriesas to the assignment
of the animals.
Whythe Bull shouldprecedethe Lion doesnot at first appear,
but the Bull, Aleph, as a horned animal, represents the earlier
Elephant, displaced in the north. TheElephant,it may be noted,
figuresin the Cypriote syllabary.
Theapportionmentof Tar, Tara, and Kon, Kona, Ku,to the
Bull and Lion, is not difficult. Though Tara or Tura is also an
Indo-European form for Bull, it is only so because it belongs to
universallanguage. Lookingto Africa we find Tar,as Turi, Toro,
Tolo,andKon,as Kun, Kenen,Jinan.
