When I came to look at the meanings grouped underthese
heads, I found that theyexhibited a remarkable correspondence
withthoseof the Accadian signs *-TT-^,Gi, ^Jf-^, ga, gi, fct^,c'a,g'e,g'u,gan,\ , gam, J^J,ga, and the correlated formswith
initialm (w, v) and d, z. And justas in Accadian we find a sort of
hesitation betweeninitialg and k, and G-forms oftenhavedoubles
withinitial K ; so Chinese wordswhich originallyhad an initial g,
often have secondary formswith initial k. "-ff-^ ,~^, gi-va,
"TT^"JitGI_EN>"TT^t^^fflF'GI"IN>showthatgin,or gen, is the
primary soundof —J-^ ; and the second character, £►[•<$ had
also the values GIN, gi. Now gin, the AoadL.n originalof
the Assyrianqanfi (i"?2p)>"a reed," has also the further meanings
assignedto it in the Assyrian text : kanu, " to be fixed, "kenu,"fixed,"
''firm,""right,""faithful,""friendly";iqp&ru,"to send"; iaru,"to
turn,""to return," " to become," "to be" ; biblu, "wish," "desire";
sanaqu," to press together," " confine," " shut in," " close a door,"
"join,"" to hearken to," "to obey"; gimru,"all,""thewhole"(com
plete); esiru, " a band " ; kapa$u, " to draw together,"" close mouth
