appearsto be cognate. The strongerform, gun, " tribute," corre
sponds to the Chinese kung (kong, gong, ging)," to give " ; kung,
"presents,""tribute,""taxesin kind." Cp. also wan(men,mun),
" to send presentswhenaskingafterone." - The Accadianmul,belu, "lord,"and mulu,Mliu,"lady,"
dialecticformsof (g)en, "lord,"andnin,"lady,"answerto mu, "a
localruler,"which is written in the same wayas mu, " mother" ;
ming,"a young wife" (cp. Accadian gin, amtu, "maid");wa, "a

areusedas signs of the plural (cp. the G-form g'ia). Corresponding
to this, we have the Chinese man(mun),which is used as a sign of
thepluralof persons; e.g.,wo-man,"we,"ni-man,"you";ti-Kiiing-
man, "the brothers"; cp. also min, "a multitude"; fan min-min,
" a mass of people." gis = mu = rabU, "great,"is cognate. - The Accadianmulu,mul,men, anaku," I," cp. gin, anaku,
"I,"correspond to the Chinese mat, mu, "I"; wu, "I,""my";
withwhich,again,we may compare the Accadian mu, ma, "my,"
mu-mu,me, "our," "us "(suffixpronouns), mulu(= ngalu), amelu
"a man," and mulu,niSu, "the people,"are represented by min
"the people," "the commonmultitude." It has been made an
objectionagainstAccadian that me,men, meanboth / and thou,
youandus;but an exactly similar phenomenon meetsus in the
Chinese. Nungis " I " in Nanking andFuhchau,but in Kiangsu it
means"you,""thou." Dr. Edkins observesthatnungis a form for
the first personal pronounin Kanghi, but at Shanghai it is the second,
