WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
Education in this country isn’t fair. Young
people from disadvantaged backgrounds don’t
do as well in school as their peers. This isn’t
because they are any less able but because they
don’t have access to the same opportunities
which enable progression. This can significantly
limit their future paths.
The pandemic has exacerbated this issue.
Before the crisis, disadvantaged pupils were, on
average, already 18 months behind their peers.
Projections suggest school closures and covid
absences will have widened this gap by as much
as 75 per cent.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?
Action Tutoring is a charity tackling this
issue head-on in schools across the country. We
empower inspiring volunteers as tutors to
provide academic support, improving pupils’
attainment and unlocking future opportunities
in education, employment and training.
We know tutoring works to improve grades.

It provides a safe space for pupils with low
confidence to speak up and overcome the
obstacles they’re facing. The Education
Endowment Foundation has calculated that
an intense programme of one-to-one tuition
could add as much as five months’ progress
to a young person’s schooling.

WHAT CAN I DO?
We need more tutors and it couldn’t be
easier to get involved. Our volunteers range in
age from 18 to 83 and no previous teaching
experience is necessary. We have face-to-face
opportunities in eight areas across the country
but with our online offering you can support
from anywhere in the UK.
It’s a small commitment, just one hour a
week, for just over two months. We’re looking
for tutors to support with either maths or
English at primary or secondary level. We
provide the tutoring workbooks - so there’s no
lesson planning required.
Join us and give back. It’s easy and rewarding.
We’ll train you, support you and you’ll be part of
a team that’s truly making a difference.

Tackling education inequality head-on

“ There is nothing better than to see a child
overcome their challenges and make
progress. On a personal level, volunteering
has allowed me to develop new skills, be
creative and meet people from different
professions and backgrounds. Volunteering
is all about making a positive contribution
to community and society, which is
incredibly rewarding and is so necessary in
the current climate.”

consultant paediatrician
