1935:Charles Wright is born in Hardin County,
Tennessee.
1936:W. H. Auden’s poem, “Funeral Blues,” first
appears in The Ascent of F6,a play written with
Auden’s longtime collaborator Christopher Ish-
erwood.
1942:Henry Taylor is born in Lincoln, Virginia.
1943:James Tate is born in Kansas City, Missouri.
1943:Michael Hartnett is born in Newcastle West
in County Limerick, Ireland.
1948:W. H. Auden wins the Pulitzer Prize in Po-
etry for The Age of Anxiety.
1950:Howard Nemerov publishes “The Phoenix.”
1951:Jorie Graham is born in New York City in
May.
1956:Robert W. Service dies of a heart attack on
September 11 and is buried in the Brittany re-
gion of France.
1956:Alan Dugan writes “How We Heard the
Name,” which appears in the multiple award-
winning Poemsin 1961.
1958: Stanley Kunitz’s “The War Against the
Trees” appears in Selected Poems, 1928-1958.
1962:Alan Dugan’s Poemswins the Pulitzer Prize,
the National Book Award, and the Prix de Rome
(awarded by the American Academy of Arts and
Letters).
1963:Robert Frost dies.
1965:Naomi Long Madgett publishes “Alabama
Centennial” in her third book of poems, Star by
Star.
1967:Langston Hughes dies in New York on May
22.
1970:James Tate publishes “Dear Reader.”

1971:Pablo Neruda wins the Nobel Prize in Liter-
ature.

1973:Muriel Rukeyser writes “Ballad of Orange
and Grape” toward the end of her long career.

1973:W. H. Auden dies and is buried in the Poet’s
Corner in Westminster Abbey.

1973:Pablo Neruda dies from heart failure on Sep-
tember 23.

1975:Michael Hartnett publishes “A Farewell to
English.”

1980:Muriel Rukeyser dies.

1983: Henry Taylor publishes “Landscape with
Tractor.”

1986:Henry Taylor wins the Pulitzer Prize for The
Flying Change,which includes “Landscape with
Tractor.”

1988:Howard Nemerov is named Poet Laureate of
the United States.

1989:Jorie Graham’s “The Hiding Place” first ap-
pears in the May 22 issue of the New Yorker.

1991:Howard Nemerov dies.

1996:Jorie Graham’s Dream of the Unified Field:
Selected Poems 1974-1994wins the Pulitzer
Prize for poetry.

1997:Charles Wright publishes “Black Zodiac.”

1999:Bruce Dawe publishes “Drifters” in his first
book of poetry, No Fixed Address.

1999:Michael Hartnett dies in Dublin on October
13.
