Country’s first Oscar nomination
The South Asian country of Bhutan has received its first
Oscar nomination. The Oscars, held every year in the US,
reward achievements in filmmaking. The film Lunana:
A Yak in the Classroom has been nominated for the Best
International Feature Film award. It tells the story of a man
who is sent to teach children at a remote mountain school.Tonga
Internet restored after tsunami
An internet cable connecting Tonga to the rest of the world
has been fixed, five weeks after an underwater volcano
damaged it. The eruption sent tsunami waves crashing
onto the Pacific island. The 520-mile cable lies on the
ocean floor. Now that it’s been fixed, islanders are able
to contact friends and family much more easily.Fiji
Children’s books inspire climate action
A book series has been created to help children living in
the Pacific Islands to protect the ocean from pollution and
to care for the environment. The Pacific Islands are in the
south-eastern Pacific Ocean and include Fiji. The series
of 10 books are written in the Fijian language and were
made by local writers and illustrators.Dubai, UAE
New museum opens
A new museum has opened in Dubai,
in the United Arab Emirates (UAE),
called the Museum of the Future. The
museum is all about the technology of
the future and what the world might
be like in the year 2071. The outside of
the building is shaped like an egg and
covered with quotes written in Arabic.
Inside, there are seven floors, with
exhibits that allow guests to virtually
explore space stations and rainforests.Gulmarg, India
Igloo café opens
An igloo café described as the world’s
largest has opened at a ski resort in
India. The café, called Snoglu, was
built at the Gulmarg ski resort. Syed
Wasim Shah, who created the igloo
café, says he was inspired by a trip to
Switzerland. The igloo is 11.5 metres
tall and has a diameter of 13.5 metres,
which Shah says is a new world record.
The resort has applied for the record to
