know was that their thoughts about the king, his dignity, his legal
power, his individual personification of the state, his duties, his privi
leges, and his ultimate inadequacy and transitoriness, were all worked
out by the forgotten Jews of the Diaspora as they struggled to adapt
their Jewish heritage to the daring claims of hellenistic and Roman
royalty.
