The Politics of Philo Judaeus: Practice and Theory, with a General Bibliography of Philo

(Joyce) #1

128 A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PHILO

cate the more obvious cases in which items are important for more than
one category; but all students of Philo know that valuable comment

upon almost any Philonic doctrine may appear in a secondary work
which deals primarily with any other aspect of his teachings. One using
the Bibliography should therefore be warned not to assume that titles
in a given classification exhaust the literature, even the literature in this
Bibliography, on that subject. The titles are arranged chronologically

within each section; when two or more titles in the same group ap
peared in the same year they are listed alphabetically by author.

Items marked with an asterisk (*) are a part of Mr. Goodhart's pri
vate collection; of those marked with a dagger (t) he has a photostat.
He will be glad to have scholars use the collection for works not other
wise accessible and to lend any but a few of the books to College or
University Libraries. We shall try to keep the Bibliography growing

through the years, and shall be grateful for notice of publications from
authors, as well as for suggestions of titles which should have been in
cluded here.
