The Politics of Philo Judaeus: Practice and Theory, with a General Bibliography of Philo

(Joyce) #1
i68 A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PHILO

GREEK MANUSCRIPTS, H.
CODICES containing a Catena on Proverbs in which Philo is cited.
Of the numerous codices described by Karo and Lietzmann, no. 26, pp. 300-
312, the following (nos. 229 to 234) are the only codices which appear with
some certainty to contain Philonean extracts. Since the authors cited in this
catena are frequently not named it is impossible to determine from general
descriptions which contain Philonean extracts and which do not. It is quite
probable that the Philonean extracts are to be found in other codices contain
ing the catena on Proverbs.^10 A list of these codices is given by Rahlfs, no. 33,
pp. 415-420.

  1. Vaticanus Reginensis 77, paper, XVI. century, copied in 1598 from a
Munich codex (no. 230? or no. 231?).
Contains: Catena on Proverbs with a Latin translation by David Hoe-
schel. The catena contains an extract from Sob. and another extract not
preserved in extant treatises of Philo. It reads, 6 auric: TVJV euKara-
rrpvjoTov UAKJV CTTIUCASC yjuiv ort noppwrdrcj TOU rrupoc anoTifleoSai.
    See C-W., no. 23, II, xvii-iii; K.-L., no. 26, p. 304.

  2. Monacensis 32, paper, 503 folios, XVI. century, written or owned by
Michael Sophianus. Wendland thinks this codex may have been the
    exemplar of no. 229.
Contains: Catena on Proverbs (fols. 1-86).
    See C.-W., no. 23, II, xviii, note 1; K.-L,, no. 26, p. 304.

  3. Monacensis 561, paper, pages numbered from 1 to 271, XVI. and XVII.
centuries; on what would be page 273 begins folio number 137 which
numbering continues up to 148. Karo-Lietzmann suggest that this
codex is the exemplar of no. 229.
Contains: Catena on Proverbs (pp. 1-271) with readings from another
codex copied on the margins by David Hoeschel; also extracts made
by David Hoeschel from another codex (fols. 137-148).
    See K.-L., no. 26, p. 304.

  4. Venetus 23, parchment, XI. century (IX. century by K.-L.).
Contains: A catena on Proverbs (fol. 101) arranged in alphabetical
order without tide, which, Morelli says, so far as the beginning is con
cerned agrees with the following, nos. 233, 234.
    See Morelli, no. 2, cod. 23; cf. K.-L., no. 26, p. 309 f.

  5. Laurentianus,^11 a codex described by Bandini, Catal., I, 252, entided

  6. Wendland mentions Angelicanus 113 (C-W., no. 23, II, xvii, note 2) and Vaticanus 1802
{Ibid., Ill, xvi) but does not state that they contain the Philo extracts. Both are described by
    K.-L., no. 26, pp. 304, 308.

  7. The Laurentianus codex may be the one listed by Karo-Lietzmann as plut. VII, 30 and
described by Rahlfs as of paper, 246 folios, A.D. 1323, catena on Proverbs 1-212$ (fol. 113). See
