The plate facing page 178 shows Philo wearing the dress and typical
hat of a medieval Jew. In the plate facing page 314, he is in the bloom
of the Renaissance (the Nuremberg Chronicle, 1492). It is interesting
that a century later Rembrandt was so impressed with Philo's personal
ity that he painted "My Father as Philo the Jew," now at the Ferdinan-
deum, Innsbruck; see Wilhelm Bode, The Complete Wor\ of Rem
