  1. Take any two notes and explore the chord combinations available.

  2. Take any two chords and explore the melodic possibilities between
    them.

  3. Listen to some familiar music and see if you can identify the non-
    chord tones by ear.

  4. Write a chord progression and extract the structural tones.

  5. See how many different non-chord tones you can add and determine
    which ones work well for your style of music composition.

  6. Invent a whole new melody by removing some of the original struc-
    tural tones and leaving the non-chord tones.
