Voice control functionality is seeing increased adoption in vehicles in order to prevent driver distractions by enabling
hands-free operation. However, as the vehicles are operate in noisy environments, noise reduction is essential for imple-
menting voice I/F in automotive. One method of sensing only the intended sounds is to use beamforming technology,
which typically utilizes 2 phase shifted microphones to sense the distance and direction of the sound source. For
example, in a car the microphone array can be configured to isolate voice only from the direction of the driver, and treat
sounds from all other directions as noise.
Connecting the ECU to the HVAC and cluster makes it possible to perform a variety of operations via voice control, such
as temperature adjustment, changing/selecting songs, and attending telephone-calls.
