Nextwe come to a large wellcut cartouche of Khufu, with his
bannername, whichhas been destroyed;the whole is much defaced.
Furtheron, on the same wall,is the name of Nefer-ka-ra, and his
bannernameNeterKau;this is Pepi II, who is credited witha reign
of 100 years by Africanus, andcame4th in the list of monarchs of
the Vlth dynasty. Thelast stela in the cutting has a banner name
of Anx-xa-u! andthe cartouche showsonlythe ra and partof an n
at the bottom, but this is sufficient to identify it with Mer-n-ra,Wiede
manngivesthis king a further nameof Hor-em-safor Ment-em-saf.
A line below the stela containsthe date, but is so destroyed that
only" day 5 " can be made out ; this is a pity, as mentions of this
kingare very rare.
A complete line on the stelagives the title, " Great lord of
Behedu, the good godlordof the two lands."
Thiskingappearsto have reignedbetweenthe two Pepi's.
Enteringthe quarry, the next stelais a well cut one, on a fallen
mass of rock nearthe centre; it is dated in the 25th year of
Meri-ra(PepiI) ; it was cut by or for a noble of the Unt nome, whose
nameseemsto have beenAnx-ses,andhis father's namexaa-
On the same blockjustbeyondthe last mentionedinscription
someonehas scratched thirteen lines, which seem to have no
connectionwithit.
Thewritersays," I am (one) lovedof his (sic) lord, praisedof
his town, I am the superintendent of the great affairs devoted
to the officer. I am the superintendent in its entirety (overall) in
the place (?) of quarrying (?) ," and which Mr.Blackdenhas
pointedout to me, that theseroughscrawlslookas if they hadbeen
madeby some one, perhapsa prisoner, caricaturing the ordinal v
stringsof titles, andin the last lineit certainly looksas if he hac»
saidhe was " the chief of wickedness or of the wicked! "
All the rock to the north of these inscriptions is covered with
littlefigures of men standing or sitting, with two or three short
inscriptionsverydifficultto make out ; one morelegible thanthe

clear; probably thesefiguresrepresentvariouschiefsor gangers of

Nearthis is another cartoucheof Meri-ra (PepiI), and on the
left hand sideof it, but separated fromit by a line cut in the stone,
are the titles of a Xllth dynastyofficial,TchutiNe)tfsson Tehuti
