We find that he was " a prince, wielderof thrones(?), chiefof the
priests, great one of five, great chiefof Unt." Nowthesetitlesare
very highones, and are borne completeat Der-el-Nakleh onlyby
Tehutihtp, the owner of the tomb commonlycalled"theColossuson
the sledge tomb." He was a "great one of five," but the other
peopleburiedthere,as far as I can recollect, werenot. Sep and Aha
Nexthaveall the other titles, and also I think TehutiNext the son
of Nehera.
At Der-el-Nakleh we have severalpeoplenamedTehutiNext,and
at Sheik Saidwe have a man namedTehutiNextwhosemotherwas
Teta ; he repairs an older tombof the Vlth dynasty. Unfortunately
we cannot identifythe exact man, though he was probably one of
the people buriedat one of these two places.
Leavingthe fallen blocks, let us turn to the north wall of the
quarry. Closeto the eastern side of the entrance we came uponthe
cartoucheof Nefer-ka-ra(PepiII) threetimesrepeatedin inscriptions,
but only one of them is clear. It is written in hieratic in red ink on
a smooth surfacea few inches abovethe present groundlevel, and
it was in this inscription we first found the name of Hat-nub; the
dateis unfortunately defective, but we can make out two tens in the
years; it seems to have beenwrittenby a man namedKhumhtp, who
was sent to the quarry, but the object is not clear. A little further
on is an inscription datedin the 14th year of Pepi II, whose banner
name onlyis given. The writer hereseemsto have gone to Hat-
nub accompanied by the officer of the road and the chief of Unt to
cut out four tables of offerings, but for whom, and what his name
was we are not certain. Goingeast we come to an inscription to the
rightof the above. It is undated, but it contains the cartouche of
Seneferu, the last king of the Illrd dynasty; it is unfortunately in
poorcondition, and the meaning not clear, but it seems to have been
writtenby the style by some one in the Vlth dynasty. Nextwe
have to go down the slope of dibris to nearly the bottom of the
quarry, whereon the east wall an inscription in large red letters tells
us that Amenemhat son of Nehera was sent in the 30th year of xeper~
ka-ra(UsertasenI) on the day of the Sed festival, to get alabaster
for the king, and furtheron he mentions a statue whichwas ap
parentlyhis object. We learn also that his mother's namewas Sat-
udz-hotep,and his grandfather's Kai.
The Sed festival mentionedin the first line of the inscription is
knownto us even as early as Pepi, but I do not recollect mentions
