sphinxis therefore the rare Reheniof Amen, knownon monuments
of Amenhotep III, and the original of Jupiter Ammon.
On the other face is a wonderful deity, winged, and piercing
a serpent witha large spear. His featuresare those of Bes, his
head-dress is conical, reeded, and perhaps actually made of a
bunch of reeds tied together, while from the top of it hangs a
thickropeto the knee. Unhappily,the name of the strange god is
hopelesslymutilatedby a fracture of the stone. Thefigurereminds
one of some representations of Sept, the godof the East, but

its head-dress andits association withthe name of Rameses suggest
thatit was a form of Set with someof the attributes of Horus.*
