Mar.6] PROCEEDINGS. [189..
Notes.
Thischapteris seldom foundin the complete shapewhichit has
in the Turin Todtenbuch. The shortest copyof it is that in the
tombof Horhotep (Miss.Arch.Fr.,p. 158) ; it has but a few lines ;
but theyare veryimportant,as giving the earliest formof the formula
Q^l/wv^<==>(— -, » I] MTs [1 «K which is an invocation
to the battlements. Thecommonreading, whichadds the pro
nominal suffix "*""•III both to the verb and to its subject,J is
ungrammatical. ThepapyriAu,Pg, and Ij, rightly omitthe suffix
afterthe verb, in the early partof the chapter.
Thecoffinof Amamu has a chapter of the same title, but with
quitea different text.
- Sacred Hawk. Betweenthis andthe GoldenHawkof the
last chapter the vignettes make no distinction but that of colour,
whichis indicative of age rather thanof kind. ThetypicalEgyptian
Hawk maybe identified with the Falco Lanarius, or with the
Peregrinus,but naturalists tell us that "the Lanierof Buffon is the
perfect state of the male Peregrinus," andthat "the Lanner of
Pennantis a young femalePeregrine." - Thy powers, *^S$ baiu.
- The goal« "vX pf or 5 ~~wv ^-*-^, a word we have already
met in chapter 72 (see Note 3), and which occurs lateron in the
presentchapter. It is apparently connectedwiththe verb of motion,
X vX .A , and seems hereto correspond to the Greek /3aX/3(«e?,or the
Latincarceres,the two posts whichwereat once the starting point
and the goal
" signum undereverti.
" Scirent, et longos ubi circumflectere cursus."*
- Invested S ^i\ Q , which is connected with fi 1 1.
The determinative Q is the symbol of investiture, whichis also
expressedby the signfcjf• A mummied personis called Sahu,
in virtueof his investiture.
- Aeneid, V. 130.
