Notes.

1. I cannot agreewith thosewhohavehithertotranslatedthis
   chapter. The only grammaticalinterpretationwhichseemspossible
   for the first sentencedependsupon the sense givento the suffix
   tit. I take this as representing the second person singular.
   B. *^S , tne person at rest (Osiris) is the one invoked, and is here
   translatedby the vocative.


2. The words whichfolloware evidently the words of Osiris and
   thoseattachedto him, whichare addressed to the deceased and are
   repeatedby him. Thetext here, as indeed everywhere, is very
   corrupt.


3. Thrown open,(I " (1(1 j. I have explainedthe sense of the
   verb mes (Proc. Soc. Bibl. Arch.,1882,p. 70) as stretching out,

Chapter whereby one avoideth being conveyed to the East in the

Netherworld.

Oh thou Phallusof Ra, who fliest fromthe storm, disablement

arisethfromBabawhousethagainstme might beyondthe mighty

and power beyondthe powerful.

If I am conveyed away,if I am carried off to the East ; if all

evil and injurious thingsof a feast day of fiends are perpetrated

uponme through the waving of the Two Horns, thenshall be

devouredthe Phallus of Ra and the Head of Osiris.
