Notes.
Thischaptercontainsoneof those threats(of which thereare
other instances)made to the gods. Thespeaker is in fact so
identifiedwithdivinitythatany evil which happensto him mustbe
conceivedas involving the same calamityto the gods and to the
universe.
Thereis a very considerabledifferencebetweenthe earlier and
the later texts. Thereis very greatconfusion in the text of the
Turin Todtenbuchas compared withthatof the Cadet papyrus.
(1) Blindness, J O \> ^ in the earlier and I *~*~ in the
/w"/w _Zl I I I *3 ° o
latertexts. The latter form, whichhas for determinative pearls
or globules of some kind, remindsone of the disease formerlycalled
gitttaserena.
(2) Destruction, 9 ^=1 Vv /fe^.-'i^. But this word is written
in different waysin the papyri. WithM* as a suffix it would mean

' my destroyer.' Ca gives ^| as a determinative, andthuscreatesa
god Hetmu, or at least a name punninguponthatof Tmu, to which
it is united.

  1. The morerecent texts, likethoseof the Turin Todtenbuch,
inserta negative particlebeforethe mention of each disaster. They
praythatthe Phallus of Ra may not be devoured, thatthe blindness-
    maynot come uponTmu,andso on.
