  1. Two of the ancient papyriCa and Ad read Horus,the others
    havethe Great goddess,andso has Ad in the next line. Themore
    recenttextshave(noturit,'thegreatone,'but)urerit,'thecrown.'

  2. The Sprinklinggod ^^C3a ^> Jj Aashu. Thisgod
    is mentioned but once in the Book of the Dead, andhis name is
    here interpreted conjecturally in consequence of the function
    assignedto him andof the not unlike word(1 %..j$ as4 'spit.'

  3. Protection. I read V" | instead of §,| in the early papyri.

  4. Thoth. The recent texts have Chepera, an evident error.
    Theallusion is to the storm or distress fromwhichThothrescues
    the Eye of Horus.

foremost among the Spirits of Annu ; let me be exalted in your
presence. I am a well-doer towardsyou. Lo I come, thatI may
purify this Soul of mine in the most highdegree; let not that
impediment proceeding from your mouth be issued against me
whichgivethone over to ruin : let me be purified in the lake of
propitiationandof equipoise : let me plunge intothe divine pool
beneaththe two divine sycomoresof Heaven andEarth.
Now let my Fold be fitted for me as one victoriousagainstall
adversarieswhowouldnot that rightshouldbe done to me.
I am the Only one ; just andtrueuponthe Earth. It is I who
