lationis —
"Themakingf of a kbt fraction. Accordingas is said to thee
' what is •§• of i?' make thou its double andits six-times; thatis
its f. Behold thou, is done likewise in reference to every kebt
fraction(?) that mayoccur."
Theprecise meaningof tat kbt is unknown. Thescribehas
expressedthe rule badly: he should havesaid "take the half and
the sixth part."

The words left untranslated are U M which occurfre-

quently in the subsequent pagesof the papyrus. Thephrase is
foundalsoin the tomb of the accountant Paheri(L.D.II, 4; Tylor
andGriffith,Tombof Paheri, PI. IX, l. 42), butI cannot catchits
technicalmeaning. Possiblyit is, " the thing is done, accordingas
takesplace....,"i.e., the way to do it is by "

multiplication: -cs>- 5 K |-w-- ¥jv bas the same meaning,
" perform the operation of counting on " a number, and
occursseveraltimesas an abbreviation of it. It may referto some
