decisiveinstance. It is the name for the corn as used in making
bread. Hereagainthe name of the measure is not repeated.
In No. 74 read for tp &c, *i* f ..-O II .--O southerncorn,
heqat200.
Thefollowingis a complete translationof No. 72 as a specimen,
fromwhichthe others can be made out :—
" Section of exchanging bread for bread : as is said to thee,
'breadof pefsu 10, 100 loaves,exchangedfor a quantity of loaves
of pefsu 45 ;' (the problem is to find theirquantity); make thou
the excess (**"=)of 45 over 10, it becomes 35 ; make thou 10 to
find35, it becomes 3^ ; make thou 100 3^ times, it becomes 350 ;
addthou 100 to it, it becomes 450;say thou it is the exchange-
value,breadof pefsu 10 loaves 100 for bread of pefsu 45 loaves 450 ;
it makes in bread-corn 10 heqat."
The scribe should have simply divided 45 by 10, and have
multiplied 100 by the result.
In No. 73 I do not understand the expression °^"nV\<=>
A ] < w , M possibly meaning"it is easy to reckon its exchange
value?"
No.79, on Plate XX. Thisis evidently an addition written in
a not very appropriateplace. For the explanation of the section we
are indebted to Rodet (JournalAsiatique,VIImeSeVie, vol. 18,
1881,p. 450 ff.) Thefirstlineis disfigured by a patch withcopied
writingthat is not quite legible. It begins ' |Q • JJ... cr~D
one woman (?)...house(?); perhaps to be restored, "anold woman
