STEL.E FROM WADY HALFA.

Some of the material resultsof Captain Lyons'sexcavationsin
Southern Egypthavereached Oxford. Four sandstonestela?,all
foundin the northern Brick Temple at Haifa,* are now in the
AshmoleanMuseum,the keeper of which, Mr. Arthur J. Evans, has
kindly enabled me to publish them here. The identification of
HaifawithBowvis further confirmedby these stelae,threeof which

I. 17 x 15 in. Above is the disk, with wings and uraei.

The last sign in line 5 may be & n ; it is not © , &Z4 , or t=r.
Thethirdsectionof the stele showsthe king, UsrtsnI, wearing the
helmetxpriand embracing a deity of somewhat indistinctfeatures.
The head-dress,—the tall double featherswithuraeus in front, —is
clear. Theface is perhaps intendedfor that of the local Horus.
Behindthe king standsan attendant, holdingin his right handthe
tall fan or standard, whileover his shoulder are slung his master's
sandals. Thestele has been brokenoff below the hips of these
figures. A part of the disk's feathers,the king's helmet,part of the
fan and the face of the god are painted black(or dark blue ?) ; the
rest of the fan and the hieroglyphics are yellow.
II. 12^ x 8| in. Above is the winged disk;immediatelybelow
it were eight horizontallines of text. But of these onlythe final
