(Nora) #1

Nov.6] PROCEEDINGS. [1894.

The wrong assertions that I have uttered, and the wrong
resistancewhichI have offered: let them not be imputed to me.
ForI am the green gem, freshat the throat of Ra, given by
those who are at the Horizon : their freshnessis my freshness
[saidtwice],the freshness of my Ka is like theirs, andthe dainties
of my Ka are like theirs.
Thouwholiftestthe hand at the Balance, and raisest Lawto
the nose of Ra in this day [of my Ka] : do not thou put my head
awayfrom me. ForI am the Eye whichseethandthe Ear which
heareth; and am I not the Bull of the sacrificial herd, are not the
mortuarygifts(3) upon me and the supernal powers[otherwisesaid:
the powers aboveNut].
GrantthatI may passby thee, andmaypurifymyselfandcause
the triumph of Osiris overhis adversaries. (4)

impliedby the ideographic signf I, the taking hold, embracing, and
kindred notions (Proc. Soc. Bibl. Arch., Vol. X, p. 578). The
notion of appeasing an angry personage is no more necessarily
involved in the Egyptian wordthanin the Latin propitiare. M.

Thepicturesin the temple of Luxor (Denkm., Ill, 74 and 75)
are well knownwhichrepresentthe birth of Amenophis III. The
infant prince in each of these picturesis accompanied by his
ka, his exact image. Theka is nursed andsuckled by the same
    goddesses.
But perhaps the best commentaryon our text is to be found in
the picture recentlypublishedby the French MissionArcheologique
(Templede Luxor, fig. 203), in which both the royal infantandhis
ka are being fashionedby the hand of Chnum, upon his potter.s
    wheel.
